what did you mean when you said that spotify has ruined music for you?
I mean that using Spotify has drastically changed the way I listen to and interact with music, and not for the better. Listen, I’m not one of those people that think e-readers are the devil and that they’re killing print books or whatever. But I sincerely feel like things like Spotify, while they certainly have their advantages, are legitimately and negatively changing the way listening to music works. First of all, I forget about 60% of music exists. An online database like Spotify, in which everything - or most things, I’ll get to that in a minute - is at your fingertips, it’s just too much! you can’t possibly ever listen to all of the music you would normally listen to with say, a curated iTunes library or a physical CD collection. I can’t just like, put all of Spotify on shuffle, which was always a joy w/ iTunes because my iTunes library has 30,000 songs, y’all (I know this because they barely fit on my 160gb ipod classic) and every time I would put it on shuffle, I’d rediscover I song or cover or demo I completely forgot existed. And that was such a big part of enjoying music for me.
There are other factors, obv, like before I got Spotify, I also had a car, which meant I listened to a combination of CDs, mix-cds, and my iPod library. My interactions with music were so much more lively, so much more engaged. Now, I get on the subway and click on whatever Spotify playlist I remembered to sync offline that will help me avoid eye-contact with creepy dudes.
My other big thing about Spotify is that things that weren’t official releases, like covers, demos, and live versions, aren’t on there. The My Chem/The Used “Under Pressure” isn’t on there, the “When Doves Cry” cover from Romeo + Juliet isn’t on there, the Scrubs/Angels cover mashup by Bastille isn’t on there, like!!! These are all essentials!!!! The one specific Panic at the Disco demo that I saved off LJ in 2006 isn’t on there.
I just. like I pay for Spotify, I use it on a daily basis, but man I hate it
